Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for hours when dozens of them entered the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and near the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and participants so that this activity become unprofitable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have led European authorities to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
